About Mecosta County Forest Land

Mecosta County Forest Land

Mecosta County Forest Land encompasses over 38,000 acres of public forest land managed by Mecosta County in west-central Michigan. The forest features a mosaic of hardwood and conifer stands, wetlands, streams, and several lakes, providing excellent habitat for a variety of wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, waterfowl, and black bears. The land is part of Michigan’s extensive county forest system and serves as a valuable recreational resource for residents and visitors alike. Historically, the area was logged extensively in the late 19th and early 20th centuries before being reforested and protected for public use. Recreational opportunities abound, including miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and snowmobiling during the winter months. Several lakes within the county forest support bass, panfish, and northern pike fishing, while upland areas offer popular hunting grounds for small and big game. The forest also features multiple small ponds and wetland areas attractive to birdwatchers and naturalists. Although there are no large developed campgrounds within the county forest itself, several nearby state parks and public campgrounds provide ample overnight options. The area’s rural location and varied habitats make it an appealing destination for those seeking outdoor adventures away from crowded urban parks. Visitors appreciate the blend of peaceful forest settings, accessible trails, and diverse wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the year.
